Sonora’s Top 5 Beers of 2016

sonora top beers 2016

Welcome to 2017! Before we start digging into the New Year’s new beers, we wanted to share some of our favorites from 2016 with you. Cheers!

3 Stars Starsky & Dutch Milk Stout – DC favorite 3 Stars Brewing Co. uses Dutch-processed cocoa to make this delicious chocolate stout. It recently became available in cans, and I highly recommend picking up a pack when you see it.

Lagunitas Born Yesterday Fresh Hop Ale – fresh hop beers are an unsung autumn hero, and I adore this offering from Lagunitas. Packages arrive on the East Coast within a week of the beer being bottled, and you immediately taste that freshness with your first (of many) sips.

Mad Fox State Theatre V.I.P.A. – a few Virginia breweries are making the Virginia IPA – VIPA – a thing, and Mad Fox makes it an excellent thing. Lemony, crisp, and perfect for warm weather, this beer is named after a local concert hall, a hall where I once saw Blue Oyster Cult and caught Buck Dharma’s guitar pick.

Steam Whistle Pilsner – this beer made our trip to Toronto extra-delicious. It’s clean, crisp, no-frills, and damn tasty. My only critique is that it’s not available in the states.

Wicked Weed Recurrant Sour Ale – I have an iffy relationship with sours, especially ones that advertise different flavors. More often than not, the sour taste dominates everything. Not so with Recurrant, a tasty offering I sampled at Wicked Weed’s Funkatorium. The currants add a fruity depth that make this beer reminiscent of a good red wine, aided by the fact that it’s aged in Cabernet barrels.

  1. Born Yesterday is up there for me too. Did you get to try their Waldo? That is so good. My favorite from Lagunitas this year though was their West-ified Coffee Stout.
