Tonight I return to my favorite pub, McGrath’s, only this time with my friend Jimi. And tonight, for the first time in a long time, the reality of turning 30 hit me.
You see, I was invited to a good friend’s 30th birthday party this weekend, and I realized that if he is turning 30 I’m a few short days, I am turning 30 in just a few weeks. I wish I could figure out why this seems so weird. It’s just a number, it’s just another year older, yet it’s throwing me off entirely. So, let’s drink about it.
So, first I had a First Cut because I seriously adore this beer. Then I remembered that I’m not doing a great job at the project and am now two days behind. This is the problem with finding a beer you love; you just keep drinking it! So, I forced myself to try something new and landed on Rubber Soul’s Old Toad spiced ale.
As you see, it’s a deep amber in color and poors with very minimal to no head. The flavor is hard to describe, and I found myself constantly trying to pinpoint a specific taste in the finish. Given that it’s a spiced ale you’ll get the cinnamon and nutmeg expected. What I thought was a cherry flavor I believe is coming through the Belgian yeast, and while it says there’s orange peel I didn’t get that – and that’s okay. The finish lingers, which is why I doesn’t so much time trying to figure out the flavor in my mouth. I never did land on a solid descriptor which you’ll find disappointing. It’s a fall/winter beer for sure and would fit best around the holidays I think.
