It seems like just yesterday that I attended the first-ever Meeting of the Malts held in Bethlehem, PA. What an amazing experience it was listening to craft beer industry leaders Jim Koch (Samuel Adams), Dick Yuengling (Yuengling) and Sam Calagione (Dogfish Head) in a panel discussion format all while enjoying a five-course beer pairing dinner amongst fellow craft beer writers, Pennsylvania brewers and aspiring brewery owners. That was 2014.
Fast forward two years later and Meeting of the Malts is on its fifth edition of this high-anticipated, craft beer event series. In March, Dick Yuengling (Yuengling), Jim Koch (Samuel Adams), and Ken Grossman (Sierra Nevada), will be on the stage to discuss the current state of the U.S. craft beer industry and where it might be heading. Brewers Association President and CEO, Bob Pease, will also be attending to share his views.
The five-course meal during the discussion will be paired with various brews from Sierra Nevada, Yuengling and Samual Adams. Menu to be announced soon.
A silent auction will follow the meal where you can bid on unique and collectible items from a variety of breweries including autographed, one-of-a kind items.
WHERE & WHEN?
It’s all going down at the Artsquest Center at SteelStacks in Bethlehem, PA from 7:15 pm – 9:30 pm on Thursday, March 24. Tickets are $85/person.
If you’ve never been to SteelStacks, it’s a must see in and of itself. It’s the location of the former Bethlehem Steel Blast Furnace which was responsible for pouring the steel supporting the Golden Gate Bridge among other important projects (like ships and bridges) during the U.S. steel boom.
You look directly at the massive industrial structure from within the ArtQuest Center. Since the Meeting of the Malts V will be held at night, you’ll get to look through the wall of windows during the Future of Craft Beer panel discussion and 5-course dinner to see the blast furnace lit up with rotating colors of blue, purple, green, orange and red.
PRO-TIP: Come early so you can explore the entire SteelStacks complex filled with outdoor sculptures and various art installations inside the ArtsQuest Center.
Besides the main event, you’ll definitely want to attend the “pre-party” and “after-party”, as I call it. You’ll get to try new beers, meet various brewers and socialize with other craft beer enthusiasts and writers.
Penn Brewery, Zeroday Brewing, Susquehanna Brewing Co, Berwick Brewing Co, The Lion Brewery, Old Forge Brewing Co., The Brew Gentlemen Beer Co., Voodoo Brewery, Stoudts Brewing Co., Barley Creek Brewing and more.
