In and Around DC, Much To Savor Outside of SAVOR

If you’re into craft beer at any capacity, you’ve likely heard of SAVOR. It is a premiere craft beer festival, featuring breweries from all over the country offering sips and food pairings with coveted beers. It’s also one of the hottest tickets in town, with admission costing a pretty penny.

I am not one of the lucky ones when it comes to SAVOR — at least in terms of a ticket to the event itself. Living in the DC area, I am close to several bars that hold special events in conjunction with the main festival. Known as SAVOR Week, these include tap takeovers, brewery spotlights, and special beers brewed for the week itself. I discovered this last year when my husband and I went to RFD and spotted their SAVOR taplist. I got to try a special edition of  DC Brau’s The Corruption aged in tequila barrels. It was delicious, and a fun way to experience some of the festivities of SAVOR even though my wallet was lacking.

This year, area bars are continuing to hold events in conjunction with The Big Event. DC Beer features a calendar that is updated with new events each day (and is a great resource for beer events throughout the whole year), and several events for SAVOR are already listed. A few I spotted and may try to attend are as follows …

SAVOR Week: Out-of-Market VA Breweries and Brewpubs at Meridian Pint — Virginia is a large brewery hub, and has only gotten larger over the past couple of years. This event will feature the DC debuts of several Virginia breweries, including Aslin Beer Co and Triple Crossing Brewing Co. This also gives me a good reason to finally make my way out to Meridian Pint!

“Wood You Be My SAVOR”: A Tap Takeover of Foeder- & Wood-Aged Libations at Jack Rose Saloon — I am a huge fan of barrel-aged beers, usually of the stout variety. This event showcases barrel-aged sours, which I enjoy and am looking to sample more of. The 3 Stars Brandy Lyn sounds especially appetizing.

SAVOR Spotlight: 3 Stars Brewing Collaborations! at The Big Hunt — more SAVOR goodness from 3 Stars! This event will feature collaboration brews with Brooklyn’s Other Half and Maryland’s RaR. There will also be several flagship beers from 3 Stars, including their absolutely delicious Starsky and Dutch chocolate stout.

Stone Brewing Co, Smoke & SAVOR: An Evening w/ @masterpairings & Steve Wagner at Jack Rose Saloon — you’ve seen beer pairings with tacos, cookies, and barbecue … but how about cigars? The event will present a flight menu pairing a variety of Stone beers with specific cigars. More than the cigars, I am very excited to see the Stone/Bluejacket/10 Barrel collaboration, Suede Imperial Porter, on the draft list.

SAVOR 2016 Showcase: 36 Drafts from 9 Out-of-Market Brewers at ChurchKey — part of the appeal of SAVOR is to try beer from breweries you can’t otherwise find in the DC area. ChurchKey brings that aspect to their brewery in this showcase, featuring a variety of beers from Rhinegeist, Two Roads, Saugatuck, and more.

Do you plan on attending any SAVOR-related events? Maybe I’ll see you there!
