family friendly events harrisburg beer week 2017

Who says you can’t have kiddos and have a good time, because they’re lying! Harrisburg Beer Week is less than a month away, so it’s time to start planning. No need to get a sitter, bring the fam along to these family-friendly events:

Noon – Brewhouse – Rubber Soul Firkinstock – FIVE firkins

The Brewhouse is always a favorite dinner spot for my family. They have great food and great beer. Plus, they have a lovely outdoor eating area for warm weather months. They’re planning on kicking off Beer Week with FIVE firkins from Rubber Soul. Obviously this is the place to start my Beer Week too!

11am-Noon – Harrisburgers at the Broad Street Market – Harrisburgers & Beers ft. Starr Hill

I’m a HUGE fan of Harrisburgers! I literally dream about them… they’re that good! I’m also a big fan of Starr Hill beers so I’m excited to see what they come up with for this pairing. The market is a great place to take kids! It’s probably the most interesting and diverse place in all of Harrisburg. If your kiddo isn’t into burgers (mine aren’t either… kids are weird) there are plenty of other goodies to choose from. Just beware it isn’t the easiest place to maneuver a stroller (especially if you need a double wide like I do), so I would recommend baby-wearing if you have an itty bitty.

Noon – Molly Pitcher – “Name Our Brew” Contest

Molly Pitcher has become famous for their peanut butter porter… but it doesn’t have a name! I’m all about taking my kids to small local breweries. I think it’s important to show them how to responsibly consume good beer. Molly Pitcher is a great place to do that! Carlisle itself is a great place for kids, there are tons of great restaurants and parks. I highly recommend stopping in for this and helping Molly Pitcher raise money for Harrisburg River Rescue and name their porter!

Noon – ZeroDay Brewing- “It’s Always Sunny in Harrisburg” Celebration

5pm – Market Cross Pub – Long Trail Spread Your Seed Earth Day Party

6pm – Grain + Verse Bottlehouse – Meet the Brewers of Liquid Hero

6pm – Ted’s 22 – Great Lakes Rock the Turntable and GnR Giveaway

6pm – Al’s of Hampden – Free Will Meet the Brewer & 15 Beer Tap Takeover

It’s no secret that I love taking my kids to Al’s. They all LOVE going to Al’s. It’s probably my family’s most frequented dinner spot because the awesome pizza and great beer. My kids love spitting a basket of fries and a pizza while my husband and I enjoy some beer and chatting with friends (we can’t go to Al’s without running into someone we know). I’m super excited for this Free Will event too! They have great beer and their team is always fun to talk to.

10am – Sturges Speakeasy – Troegs Beer Brunch

You might not think of taking your kids into the city is the best idea, but if you want to try it out, Sunday is the day to do it. Parking is free and the crowds are small. Sturges is a GREAT brunch spot for families. They have a delicious brunch menu with great choices for kids. I recommend making a reservation for this because space is limited in there and they only have a handful of high chairs!

12pm – The Boro Riverview – Rubber Soul Brewing’s Sunday Funday

5pm – Grain + Verse – “VW Night” Rubber Soul Special Release

5pm – Molly Pitcher – What’s Popping?

As I mentioned above, Molly Pitcher is a great brewery to bring your whole family to. What could make it even better? POPCORN! Popped Culture (located in the Broad Street Market) makes yummy and interesting popcorn flavors that you and your kids will all enjoy. This event will be a great opportunity to try some of their tasty varieties with your kids while you pair them with Molly Pitcher’s beers.

6pm – Al’s of Enola – Monday Funday with Sierra Nevada

4-7pm – Ever Grain – St. Everworks Collab Beer benefiting HRRES

Ever Grain is another great brewery to bring your family to. I usually see several children with their parents anytime I’m in there. It’s a great, laid back atmosphere where you don’t have to worry about your kids making too much noise or being in the way. This event in particular is going to be really cool! Ever Grain brewed a collaboration beer (an organic kolsch) with St. Boniface and the Millworks with a portion of every sale of the beer will be donated to Harrisburg River Rescue!

5-8pm – Arooga’s Camp Hill – Troegenator Randall

5-8pm – Harvest Seasonal Grill – Beer & Food Pairing

6pm – Market Cross Pub – Beer & Ice Cream Flight Pairing

6pm – Peachtree – Get Fresh with Yards Night

6pm – Market Cross Pub – Victory Ice Cream Flight

6:30-8:30pm – Al’s Pizza Dillsburg – Big Bottom Brewery Meet the Brewer Night

3pm – Moo-Duck – All Small Batch Tap Takeover

We took the kids to an event at Moo-Duck last year and it was great! My oldest kiddo loved the craft sodas they had on hand, and the snacks and craft sodas we got from the tasting bar. It was a great place to sit back and enjoy each others company. For this event, they have NINE small bath collaboration beers that they made just for beer week! The brewer at Moo-Duck collaborated with employees, homebrewers, and even customers to create these interesting and unique beers. I’m really looking forward to trying them!

6pm – Tattered Flag – HBG Beer Week Armistice Day

This has to be one of my favorite concepts of all of the beer week events this year. Tattered Flag is bringing in beers from breweries AROUND Harrisburg to let them into our Harrisburg Beer Week “bubble.” This is such a cool idea! Plus, Tattered Flag is a great place to take your kids, they have a brewpub with a full menu and a kids menu.

6pm – Grain + Verse – Troegs Brewing Beer Trivia Extravaganza

Grain + Verse is a great place to take kids. It has a super laid back atmosphere, and they serve super tasty pizza! I keep hearing people talk about this trivia event and how cool it’s going to be. All of the questions were written by Ffej Herb who is one of the biggest beer geeks I’ve ever met! He’s very fun, and I think this will be a great family-friendly beer-geek centered event.

4pm – Brewhouse Grille – Evolution Meet the Owner Firkin Party

5-7pm – Lancaster Brewing (Harrisburg) – Meet & Greet the Brewer of Lancaster Brewing Company

5pm – Irv’s Pub – Spring House Beer Release

5pm – Momo’s BBQ – Evil Genius Food Pairing

1pm – City Island – Mini Golf Outing

5pm – Harrisburg River Rescue – Mini Golf After Party

Need a good excuse to play hookie from work and school? This is a great one! Harrisburg River Rescue is hosting a Mini Golf Outing on City Island and they’re following it up with a block party style after party at their building including music, food, and entertainment for the kids. You don’t have to have a mini golf team to enjoy the after party, it’s going to be a blast! Bring the kids down to check out the cool rescue boats and have some fun.

4pm – Lancaster Brewing (Harrisburg) – Exclusive Brew Cask Night

4pm – Brewhouse Grille – Victory Brewing “2015 Java Cask” Firkin

5pm – Smoked – Evil Genius Coloring Contest

6:30-8:30pm – Al’s Pizza Dillsburg – Big Bottom Brewery Meet the Brewer Night

Big Bottom Brewery will officially be the newest brewery of Harrisburg Beer Week! They’re opening just in time to have some events this year. Head down Route 15 to Al’s Pizza in Dillsburg to try some of their new stuff and meet the brewer!

5pm – Your Place Hershey – Rusty Rail Glass Night

Week Long Events:

  • “Marketing Gimmick” available at Molly Pitcher, Tattered Flag, and ZeroDay. Visit all 3 during beer week and get a special 32oz growlette!

This event is SO FREAKING COOL! These 3 breweries each brewed the SAME beer at each of their own breweries, which mean that they’ll be similar, but not necessarily exactly the same. It will be super interesting to see what the differences are! They’re also doing a punch card to take into each place and once you visit all 3 during beer week, you’ll get a 32oz growler. As if I needed more motivation!

  • Al’s PIzza Dillsburg – Enjoy $5 Flights of Big Bottom Brewing Beers all week long as we celebrate our New Brewery!
  • Garlic Poet – Daily Food Pairings + Wild, Sour and Funky Beers featured from Highway Manor Brewing Co., Collusion Tap Works, Free Will Brewing Co., Pizza Boy Brewing Co. and Tröegs Independent Brewing.
  • Harvest Seasonal Grill – St. Boniface Craft Brewing Co. & Dessert Pairing – St. Boniface Hegemony Stout (on draft) paired up with Harvest Seasonal Grill’s Chocolate Salted Caramel Mousse!
  • Lancaster Brewing Company (Harrisburg) – Featuring a unique Street Taco Entree & LBC Brew Pairing each day!
  • Moe’s Bar & Grille – Craft Take Out Week – Featuring Tröegs Independent Brewing. Keep the glass while supplies last.
  • Molly Pitcher Brewing – A different firkin or Randall infusion in our taproom each day. That’s a lot of days of infusions so you can expect things may get a bit weird with these brews.

Grocery store tastings:

I’m a huge fan of tasting beer at the grocery store, and I LOVE that our local beer wholesalers are doing a bunch of these this year. Tips for surviving Harrisburg Beer Week with your kids:

  • WiFi! I’m not above a little screen time to entertain my kids while we’re checking out a cool brewery or restaurant. Make sure you get the wifi password of whatever place you’re at so you don’t kill your data plan while your kiddo enjoys a Mickey and the Roadster Racers marathon.
  • Snacks! Not all breweries are brewpubs so make sure you pack some snacks for your little one. Gold fish are always a hit around here as are cheerios and raisins. I usually keep some jellybeans, M&Ms, or lollipops on hand for emergency back ups.
  • Soda! Breweries often carry some really cool craft sodas too whether they make them on site or bring them in. My kids LOVE going to breweries because they usually get to try some tasty root beer or interesting flavor of sodas.
  • Limits! While your kid-free friends can easily catch an Uber or Lyft home from beer week events, remember that if you’re out with your kids you need a car seat! So make sure you’re taking it easy and can safely deliver your children home to their beds at the end of the night.`
