Have you ever looked at your empty beer cans or numerous Untappd check-ins and thought, I’d like this to count for something more? Well, it can — and thanks to a good idea spreading across Twitter, it can do so at a rapid rate.

Will Gordon, who writes for VinePair; and Off Color Brewing’s John Laffler have collaborated on #DrinkForGood, a shared initiative to donate to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). The initiative? Tabulate each drink consumed for a set amount of time, then donate a set amount of money per drink to the ACLU. They suggest $1 or $2 per drink, but you can of course donate as much as you’d like.
Gordon was inspired by the news of the recent immigration ban, and its immediate effect on refugees and citizens traveling or returning to the United States. He found out while he was at home, and drinking beer. He explains:
There was nothing much more useful I could have done in the moment, but I was still unsettled by the juxtaposition of my extreme leisure and my fellow humans’ suffering. Obviously terrible things happen to millions of people every day while I live my comfortably oblivious life, so I’m not trying to claim any kind of enlightenment or anything. But for whatever reason, this airport shitshow really struck my drinking nerve. When the ACLU scored their first victory — getting the judge in Brooklyn to issue a temporary stay, or whatever it was, that first bit of good news — I told Twitter I’d donate to the ACLU for every beer I drank. Then Sunday night John Laffler of Off Color Brewing in Chicago said he’d do the same, and I think he was the one clever enough to use the #drinkforgood hashtag, and all of a sudden we had a movement!
I first heard about the initiative when I I saw fellow blogger Amanda D tweet about this project, and decided immediately to jump on board. I will be donating $1 for every beer, cocktail, or glass of wine consumed between January 30th and February 28th. My birthday is on March 1st, and I look forward to celebrating it with a gift to ACLU.
Let us know if you want to join us. I’ll be tracking my progress on Twitter (@sonorabp). Be sure to join in using the hashtag #DrinkForGood, and let us know what you’re drinking by tagging @StoutsStilettos.
Will Gordon also wants to hear from you. All month long, he will be doing a weekly round-up of #DrinkForGood participants on VinePair. The participants can be “anyone who wants to have a bunch of beers, tell a couple stories about them, [and] kick a couple bucks to the ACLU.” If you wish to participate, email ACLbrew@vinepair.com and let him know. Gordon also hopes to see this continue beyond February (as do I), so stay tuned to #DrinkForGood in March and beyond.
