Right now what seems like the majority of my craft beer consuming friends are at the holy mecca of beer events – Great American Beer Fest. Where am I? At home. In my pajamas. Moping. An on-looker watching with great jealousy as everyone and their brother, mother, and dog enjoy crazy beers and have a great time. At least I was until I realized that’s totally not me! So, instead, my BFF and I decided to have 2 of our own events this week: #GATF (Great American Trashcan Fest) and #CTBF (Collen Tierney Beer Festival).

The first, GATF, we’re going to move right past since it in no way, shape, or form involves craft beer, but instead bright blue mixed drinks that I imagine a crackhead would really enjoy. CTBF however is our main event!

It all started when my BFF obtained a bottle of DuClaw H.E.R.O. Chocolate Chipotle Stout last month. We kept trying to get together and enjoy it together, but our calendars kept interfering. We then realized during GATF that we were both available the following evening and we should drink it then. CTBF was born right then and there.

old world ipa

We pulled together a few beers to share between us and the rest of our festival goers (aka her BF and pets) and got down to business! The best part was that none of the beers we had are available at GABF as far as we know. First up was BrewDog Old World IPA, an odd bready IPA from Scotland. While drinking this we shared old college pictures and waited for football to start.

Next up was the infamous Rogue VooDoo Doughnut Maple Bacon Ale. I had this beer before on New Years and didn’t like it at all. The second go-round I found that I still didn’t enjoy it, but found the maple finish to be much more tolerable. The only thing I like about this beer is the ridiculously bright pink bottle it comes in that my BFF quickly reminded me was the color of pigs…

Third beer was the reason for the event: DuClaw H.E.R.O. I am a wuss and not a fan of spicy hot things in general, so I was a little apprehensive going into this, especially after having some super hot mango habañero beers in the past. I am very happy that I put my fears aside and had this beer because it was heavenly! I love the smooth cocoa flavor up front and how it fades to a slight tingle in the back of the throat in the finish from the chipotle peppers. Very well-balanced and not nearly as spicy as I was expecting. Well done!

bitches brew

The last beer was a last-minute pick-up: Dogfish Head Bitches Brew. I’ve had the 2010, 2011, and 2012 versions of this beer and every year I seem to forget what the beer tastes like and have to get it again. This isn’t my favorite Dogfish beer by far, but it’s alright I guess – at least that’s what my assessment was at this point in the evening.

Overall, CTBF was a huge success as it was the biggest beer fest on the east coast happening on October 11 2012 from 7pm-12am EST. Hopefully next year we will be at GABF, but until then CTBF is totally something we’re going to do every time we get together for beers.

  1. That’s the way to do it. I was feeling bummed too but I also purchased a bottle of Bitches Brew last night. It is by far one of my favorite. I actually liked the bacon maple as well.

Next year I am going. Well I have heard that before

  2. I love all of this. I was mopey too, and still am as I drink a bottle of Yuengling B&T in a hotel room in CT. But I want to partake in something like this next year!

It’ll probably be a couple years before I make it to GABF, but I think Ill be at the Beer Blogger Conference next year. Not the same, I’m aware 🙁 And as its Baltimore Beer Week, I’m excited, but also bummed out, because of the two fests going on next weekend, Id have to go alone…and that’s no fun.

What was I talking about again? Oh, right. Your post is awesome, im glad you made the best out of your situation. and sweet, blue crackhead drinks are fun.

    • Ohhhh a Beer Blogger Conference? That sounds like fun. Do you have any details on that? I’ve thought about going to Savor as well..
