It’s not officially Summer yet but the picnic season is upon us with Memorial Day coming up Monday. And, with it the temperatures here in Southern Pennsylvania have risen to the occasion. We’re looking at low 90s to high 80s this holiday weekend and sweltering humidity. That weather forecast signals my taste buds to crave and seek something more refreshing when it comes to making craft beer selections. Here are some of my recommendations that you might want to check out.
- Sierra Nevada Brewing Co: Otra Vez
Bright grapefruit with at touch of sweetness and salt. A solid American style Gose. I first had it at Meeting of the Malts V and now keep it constantly stocked in my beer fridge.
- Flying Dog Brewery: Dead Rise
On my summer favs list since it’s debut. A floral and lemon ale with hints of Old Bay. You don’t drink it and think, “My God! So much Old Bay!!” It’s very subtle and just the right balance of spice.
- Starr Hill Brewery: Sublime
A magnificent Wit beer with gobs of lime, subtle pine and the expected bready notes. An easy drinker just recently released from Starr Hill.
- Magic Hat Brewing Co: Stealin’ Time
Big ginger flavor with subtle pine and downplayed sweetness. All The Ginger!
- Deschutes Brewing Co: Hop Slice
A session IPA with tons of West Coast characteristics with a slightly softer mouthfeel. A perfect blend of Meyer lemon, apricot and grass.
- Heavy Seas Brewing: TropiCannon
People either love this one or hate it. I loved it. Like a citrus fruit salad in your mouth: grapefruit, tangerine, orange zest, pineapple and papaya. It finishes with a light pine bite.
- Tired Hands Brewing Co: Punge
Juicy DIPA with Northeast characteristics in soft/creamy mouthfeel, fruit flavor and cloudy haze. Right now, my favorite of favorites from Tired Hands.
- Tree House Brewing Co: Julius
A Northeast Style IPA with notes of passion fruit, mango and orange.
- Tree House Brewing Co: Green
A Northeast Style IPA with notes of pineapple and tangerine with a touch of orange zest.
- Hoof Hearted Brewing: Roller Blabe
Juicy Hop Bomb. ‘Nuff Said.
- To Øl: Nelson Survin
A sour IPA with a breathtaking watercolor style bottle label. Please do splurge on this one.
- Wicked Weed Brewing: Freak of Nature
A gorgeous West Coast style IPA with mild citrus and bold pine notes.
What?! No Heady Topper? – Nope. To be honest, I’m kinda over this one.
- Saucony Creek Brewing Co: XReserve
Peach & Ginger Saison with mild funk. Perfection! Two thumbs up from me. It’s one of the better saisons I’ve had.
- Victory Brewing Co: Kirsch Gose
A gorgeous cherry color with an even more gorgeous cherry tart taste and bubbly mouthfeel. It is not overly salty like some American Goses but more like the traditional German version.
- Tired Hands Brewing Co: Alien Church
Northeast Style IPA with Amarillo, Simcoe, and Centennial hops.
- Pizza Boy Brewing Co: Eternal Sunshine
Dry-hopped sour ale with bright lemon and bitter pine notes. This is NOT a full blown sour beer despite the category. So don’t expect tons of funk and tart – More of a balance between tart and hoppiness.
- South County Brewing Co: Liminal Moment
A crushable DIPA full of orange, papaya and pine that’s best pounded directly from the 16 oz can.
- Spring House Brewing Co: The Astounding She-Monster
Mango IPA that delivers on delicious.
- Tröegs Independent Brewing: Solid Sender
A juicy pale ale with a pinch of pine hop bite and biscuit/toast malt finish.
And, if I could get THIS out to the world, I would. It’s what I’ll be drinking all summer long: Sunday Morning Brewing’s Solar Terminator – My husband Derek’s award-winning double IPA that drinks like a pint of sunshine.
It’s a Northeast style IPA bursting with pineapple and mango with just a touch of hop bitterness. The mouthfeel is soft and it has a beautiful golden haze. This seriously needs to be on tap at my house all summer long. Now to convince Derek to “Brew non-stop cuz I’m thirsty!”
