Chelsie’s Summer Beer Favs 2014 Edition

So far, it’s been a really great summer here in Southern Pennsylvania. Lots of lounging by the pool, hanging with friends and family on the patio and stoking up the fire pit. The weather has been perfect almost each and every weekend. Clear skies. Low humidity. Lots of sunshine. I call it Good Beer Weather. And, there’s been much good beer to be had this summer.

Summer BeersThere are a few standout choices from my craft beer fridge which admittedly is busting at the seams. Hey, I like to try new things and pick up random bottles and six-packs of brew when I’m out and about exploring! I promise to get my collection under control by fall.

For the most part, I seem to keep coming back to a select few over and over:

New Belgium Summer Helles
It’s a seasonal lager that is super easy to drink. Smooth, malty and clean. Just a touch of sweetness. You can definitely detect hops but it’s not at all overpowering which is nice on a hot day. 5.0% ABV | 31 IBU

Long Trail Ramble
Kolsch!!! I love a good kolsch in the summer and this one might be my favorite so far. I think for me it’s the subtle peppercorn notes intermingled with citrusy goodness that I’m intrigued with. Also a seasonal beer. 5.5% ABV | 25 IBU

Kona Castaway IPA
This one is fairly new for Kona Brewing Co. and I’m so glad we have access to it here on the East Coast. A big hop smell and taste with just a hint of malt. Very floral. Citrus peel type bitterness. Simply lovely. 6.0% ABV | 65 IBU

Flying Dog Dead Rise
Old Bay in beer?! Oh, my, yes! I’m a huge blue crab fan. It’s pretty much a summer tradition to devour dozens of them. So this was a must for me to try as it’s new this year. And, I’m in love. Hoppier than I expected. But, that’s a good thing. Big Old Bay flavor.  5.6% ABV | 25 IBU

Bell’s Oberon… In Cans!
16 ounces of golden malty pale wheat ale. So glad they put this in cans for summer time adventures. No glass breaking. I’ve been a big fan of Oberon for awhile now. It’s pretty much a summer time classic for me with the big malt taste.  5.8% ABV | 23 IBU
