Greetings from Ohio! My love for beer started at an early age. My mother tells the tale of me sitting on the porch swing with my grandfather and he would let me sip the warm foam out of the bottom of the mug of his Black Label beer and I wouldn’t even flinch. My mother would yell first, then say “She’s going to grow up to love beer,” boy was she right.
I am however fairly new to the world of craft beers. Less than 4 years of drinking the “good beer”, and I’ve never looked back. Okay, I still enjoy my Yuengling Lord Chesterfield Ale from time to time. A few years ago I wanted to try something new so I ordered a Bell’s Two Hearted on tap. Colleen L. was right regarding Bell’s Two Hearted being the “gateway” beer. After that I couldn’t wait to try more.
Over the summer I fell in love with two beers. The first is a Mango Habanero blonde ale, that’s slightly sweet with a spicy kick. Produced by Catawba Island Brewing Company in Port Clinton, Ohio, this beer is hard to find and goes quickly when found. The other beer is a seasonal beer from Deschutes Brewery in Oregon. Twilight Summer Ale has a solid malt foundation paired with Amarillo hops. Only available May through September…I need to stock up. I enjoy cooking with beer too. Many of my stews and chili’s include either an ale or stout. I’ve been experimenting with beer cheese soup lately. Though tasty, I need to mix and match different beers and cheeses to make that perfect batch.
In my town many carry-outs and grocery stores allow you to mix and match a 6-pack of craft beers. I don’t like buying a 6 pack of beer I’ve haven’t tasted, craft beers can be quite expensive as you know. With the mix and match I can decide what I like and what I don’t. The mix and match has only been around in these parts for a couple years. Does your city/town offer this? If not, you need to talk to your local carryout, drive thru or grocery store. I also enjoy going to tap takeovers of Ohio beers at my favorite pub and enjoy going to local gatherings where they incorporate craft beer tastings.
My day to day involves working as a Children’s Librarian and taking care of my family. I’m married with two sons and they keep me very busy. We are a hockey family (Columbus Blue Jackets baby!) and we attend games regularly.
I’m blown away with the amount of commitment and enthusiasm the ladies on Stouts and Stilettos have for craft beer. They have inspired me to follow in their footsteps.
