Amanda W’s Top 5 Beers of 2016

Welcome to 2017! Before we start digging into the New Year’s new beers, we wanted to share some of our favorites from 2016 with you. Cheers!

Heist Brewery
(Charlotte, NC)- who would have guessed that Charlotte’s only brew pub would be creating NE style IPAs that people are standing in line for whenever cans are released?! My favorite is Citraquench’l. This American style IPA is packed with Citra hops and pours hazy.

Mexicali Stout (Birdsong Brewing, Charlotte NC) – this is a seasonal favorite of mine. Birdsong releases this beer around Halloween and throws a great party for it. The stout has a smooth chocolate taste with hints of cinnamon. The kick is at the end when the chili peppers come through. Birdsong canned this beer for a short time and it was wonderful.

Framboos Morte (Wicked Weed Brewing, Asheville, NC) – this bottle was a special release at the brewery and I was lucky enough to snag one. This American Wild Ale pours a sexy (that is the only way to describe it) fuchsia pink. As soon this beer is poured the smell of raspberries hit you in the nose. The first sip leaves you with a subtle raspberry taste as well as hints of the funkiness we all love in a well done sour.

Rum Barrel Aged Ten Fidy (Oskar Blues, Brevard NC)- what is not to like about an imperial stout that pours like motor oil and is then aged for 6 months in Jamaican rum barrels? The rum barrel creates a smooth vanilla mouth feel with just enough heat from the barrels. I went to this can release and Oskar Blues was amazing.

Need a Hug (Fonta Flora, Morgaton NC)- Fonta Flora has been gaining recognition and I can see why – they are literally creating beers from foraged local ingredients. Need a Hug is one of them. A friend opened a bottle for me on my birthday and I am hooked. This is a sour wild ale brewed with blueberries and elderberries. When it is poured the color is a pinkish-purple. The smell is a little funky but very fruit forward. The finish of this sour ale is dry and leaves you with a crisp fruit after taste. Trust me if you can ever find this bottle grab one.
